TSKK AWARDS FUNCTION

Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK) conferred its following annual awards during a public function which was held at TSKK premises on 26^th January 2012 at 5.30 pm sharp. Mandd Sobhann Gurkar and the General Secretary of Global Konknni Organization, Mr. Eric Ozario was the Chief Guest and Fr. Rosario Rocha, S.J. the Jesuit Provincial of the Goa Province was the Guest of Honour. Dr. Pratap Naik, S.J. and Dr. Chandralekha D’Souza compered the function. Chandralekha D’Souza delivered the welcome speech. Michael Gracias, Vincy Quadros, Salvador Fernandes, Walter Menezes, Brenda Menezes and Cosma Fernandes gave introduction of the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour and recipients of the awards. Fr. Efraim Gracias gave the vote of thanks. Mother Teresa Brass Band troupe from Honavar, Karnataka entertained the guests with its lively Konknni music. Rabin D’Pietro sang two songs from Amchem Noxib and Nirmonn Konknni films.

In his speech Eric Ozario stressed the need of research in various fields of Konknni and highlighted TSKK’s great contribution to Konknni language, research and movement. TSKK is the only institution which is fully dedicated for research in Konknni. He stressed the point that TSKK should continue the five centuries old Jesuit tradition of scholarship.

TSKK selected Mr. Cyriaco Dias, the veteran well known Tiatrist and Konknni film artist and the freedom fighter for his life time contribution to Konknni stage and films, for the prestigious Antonio Pereira Konknni Puroskar (APKP) 2012. He has acted in more than 1000 tiatrs. He has also acted in Konknni films Amchem Noxib, Nirmonn, Bhuierantlo Monis and Kantteanlem Ful. He has won 14 Best Actor awards and Tiatr Academy’s Life Time Achievement award in the year 2009.

The APKP award consists of a shawl, memento, traditional turban and cash Rs. 25,000/-.

Jack Sequeira Konknni Puroskar 2011 was conferred on Fr. Ave Maria Afonso for his contribution to Konknni in Roman script. The award consists of a shawl, memento and cash Rs. 5,000/-. Fr. Ave is currently the parish priest of Ucassaim Church. He is a silent and dedicated Konknni writer.

TSKK chose Mrs. Irene Cardozo as the first recipient of Basila Carvalho Konknni Puroskar 2011. She is a teacher by profession and now she has retired as a headmistress. Side by side teaching career she entered Konknni stage as an actress and singer in the year 1967. The award consists of a shawl, memento and cash Rs. 5,000/-.

Br. Eusebio Miranda of Pilar Society was chosen as the first recipient for Maria Afonso Konknni Puroskar 2011 for his contribution to Konknni journalism in Roman script. The award consists of a shawl, memento and cash Rs. 5,000/-. Br. Eusebio has worked in Pilar Printing Press and for Vavraddeancho Ixtt, the well known Konknni weekly for more than 25 years. At present he is the sub-editor of Ixtt.

Ever year TSKK selects the best Konknni book of the year written in Roman script and gives Konknni Martir Floriano Vaz Puroskar. In the year 2011 there were 11 Konknni books which qualified to be considered for the award. The Konknni essay book Tornni Xim’ of Mr. Marcos Gonsalves was chosen for Konknni Martir Floriano Vaz Puroskar 2011. The award consists of a memento and cash Rs. 5,000/-. Marcos Gonsalves is the news reporter of Konknni daily Sunaparant.

Besides, the awards, during the function TSKK distributed Lourenço & Umbelina de Scholarship of Rs. 2,000/- to Ms. Anna Fernandes, XI Std. student of Don Bosco School, Panaji; Helen Baptista Scholarships of Rs. 2,000/- each for opting Konknni as a third language to Ms. Sabiya Dukandar and Master Taufiq Badekhan IX students of Govt. High School, Alto Porvorim; Quadros Family Scholarship of Rs. 2000/-for scoring the highest marks in Konknni among Catholic students for the X Std. examination conducted by the Goa Secondary Board was given to Ms. Wilma Fernandes of Holy cross Institute, Quepem.

Antonio Pereira Konknni Puroskar (APKP) recipient Cyriaco Dias in his speech praised TSKK for its vision and dedication to Konknni. He said that he never imagined that one day he would be honoured with Antonio Pereira Konknni Puroskar for which he had collected funds when he was working in Gulf. On behalf of the recipients Irene Cardozo addressed the gathering. Approximately 300 benefactors, friends, well wishers TSKK’s, lovers of Konknni and of TSKK were present for the award function.

The G.O.A. held its first Goan SweetMaking and Tasting event on Sunday, November 15^th, 2009 atVic Johnson Community Centre in Mississauga. It was encouraging toreceive a huge response to this event, this proves that Goans arekeen to learn and continue Goan traditions.

In preparation for Christmas, 130adults and children learned how to make five Goan sweets: Doce deGrao, Bathk (Batica), Bolinhas, Kulkuls and Corambolas. The eventwas opened to children because they prepare the sweets with theirmothers and/or grandmothers. It was nice to see three generationstogether. Flevi Rodrigues demonstrated Bathk in simple steps. Thehighlight of the event was Martha Patel presenting Doce de Grao, themicrowave method, reducing the effort and time while not compromisingthe taste. We live in an environment where time is of the essence,any short cuts and tips are appreciated. Participants were alsointroduced to frozen shredded coconut from India. This eliminatesthe need to break a fresh coconut, grate and mince it. Samples ofDeep Shredded Coconut were distributed, courtesy of Deep Canada. After a step by step demonstration on how to make Kulkuls andCarambolas dough by Joana Nunes, guests were invited to a hands-onsession on how to fold and make these sweets.

Did you know there are more than 22Goan sweets? Each attendee also received a recipe book whichincluded some popular Goan sweets, a couple of Canadian Christmasfavourites and cooking tips. Participants shared their Christmastraditions like preparing Kuswar (a tray of assorted sweets, fruitand nuts) and exchanging it with their family, friends andneighbours. Later everybody enjoyed a cup of hot masala tea/coffeewith a sampling of all the sweets that were made that afternoon.

An array of Goan utensils wasshowcased; this brought back memories of Goa. Hema Pereira did anexcellent job of the display and labeling the items in Konkani.

The emcee, Michelle Dias kept the crowdentertained and on their toes by asking Goan trivia questions asthere were lots of giveaways to be won.

Thank you to all the helpers that madethis event a tremendous success. Here is to many more Goan cookingclasses!

THE ROLE OF PORTUGUESE AND BRITISH COLONIALISM INTHE MIGRATION AND SETTLEMENT OF
GOANS IN BRITAIN

Large scale international migration from Goa began during the Portuguese colonial period andhas continued throughout the post colonial period. Primary, secondary and tertiary patterns ofmigration were evident to both Portuguese and British (former) colonies and to mainlandPortugal and Britain. Intra and inter-generational migration led to settled Goan communities inPortugal and its former colonies of Mozambique, Angola and Brazil. During the post colonialperiod, Goans from the former Portuguese East Africa returned to Goa or migrated mainly toPortugal. A more recent phenomenon during this century has been the migration of Goansdirectly to Europe through the mobilisation of rights to Portuguese citizenship status acquiredfrom when Goa was a Portuguese colony. As Portugal became part of the European Union,Portuguese citizenship has entitled Goans to reside and work in its member States. This has ledto the settlement of a new wave of 21st century Goans in Britain, most coming directly from Goabut some also migrating after a period of employment and residence in the Gulf States. Thiswave of migrants complements the earlier waves of 20th century Goan migrants who hadformerly lived in British East Africa and who came to reside in Britain following theindependence of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The migration of these 20th century migrantsrequired the mobilisation of British citizenship. The paper examines the differential patterns ofmigration and settlement of the various waves of Goan migrants to Britain. It explores theirsocio-economic status in Britain and their links with Goa, including the pattern of remittances. Itdiscusses the deployment of their linguistic repertoire, in particular the use of the mother tongue,Konkani, and of English, in the occupational, domestic and recreational spheres. The socialnetworks maintained with Goa, and other satellite communities in Europe, the West, Africa andthe Gulf States are examined.

TAG’s Children’s Tiatr Festival

2^nd Children’s Tiatr Festival organized by Tiatr Academy Goa will commence from 29^th November 2011. The venue of staging the tiatrs is ‘Little Field’, Open Air Auditorium, Near the office of Electricity Department, Taleigao Goa. All shows will begin at 7:00 pm sharp. In all 9 Children’s Dramatic Troupes are participating in the competition. The detailed programme is as follows.

Declaration and presentation of awards of the competition will take place on 12^th December 2011 at 3:30 pm in the Black Box, Kala Academy, Panjim Goa.

As per the rules and regulations of the Festival, a traditional tiatr will have 6 or 7 podd’ddes, the comedy will have to be linked to the theme of the play, it must have at least 4 Cantos and there should be atleast 8 Kantaram which compulsorily must include 1 duet, 1 duo, 1 trio, 1 quartet/quintet and 1 Choral Song.

As per TAG’s scheme each participating troupe will be given a financial support of Rs. 20,000/- each for the production of the tiatr. Besides awards for the performance, acting, direction, script and all other technical aspects of the production of tiatr will be given.

There are no tickets and the competition is open to public.
